DULUTH, Ga. – During the 87th Texas Legislature, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and other legislators made huge strides to restore and protect the conservative and constitutional policies of the state. During the five month legislative calendar, lawmakers took swift action to combat current issues like weatherization and emergency communication policies, which passed after a problematic winter storm, as well as limiting the spread of critical race theory in Texas’ public schools. Another major feat for Texas was the passing of the 2021 state budget, which did not raise any taxes. However, some of the largest victories for Texas lawmakers revolved around the sanctity of life.
The Texas Senate discussed and passed seven abortion restriction bills, including Senate Bill 8 or the “Heartbeat Bill.” Authored and carried out by Senator Bryan Hughes and Representative Shelby Slawson, the Heartbeat Bill bans abortion at the six-week mark of pregnancy or after a fetal heartbeat is detected. Also included in this bill is the allowance of any private citizen to file a lawsuit against an abortion provider or against anyone else who has violated this law. Another abortion restriction bill included within the regular session was known as the “trigger bill,” which, if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, would prohibit abortion.
The Faith & Freedom Coalition proudly supports the passage of the Texas anti-abortion bills and the efforts of the conservative legislators who are fighting to protect life. Abortion stops a beating heart and takes away an innocent, God-created human’s life. The Texas anti-abortion bills, like Senate Bill 8, are a tremendous effort to fight against the evil of abortion and save millions of unborn lives.
“The fight for life is more urgent than ever, and Texas lawmakers are stepping up to the plate,” commented Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “In particular, we applaud Senator Bryan Hughes and Representative Shelby Slawson for their leadership in passing the Heartbeat Bill, as well as Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, and for their tireless championing of these essential bills.”
